Peter Gilbert is Professor of Social Work and Spirituality at Staffordshire University. He is the Project lead of National Spirituality and Mental Health Forum and Chair of the National Development Team for Inclusion. His latest book is called Spirituality and Mental Health which promotes an understanding of people’s belief systems and proves the increasing importance of spirituality in health and social care.
Peter Gilbert considers the importance of the spiritual dimension in human living in general and health and social care in particular. World philosophies and religions have always stressed the importance of the congruence of mind, heart, body and spirit, and yet modern life often seems ‘soul-less’ and ‘dispiriting’. He draws on the experience of people who have experienced mental distress, including his own, and also research evidence on the vital contribution of faith to mental well-being.
