Can a contemplative practice help us in our everyday life?

Can a contemplative practice help us in our everyday lives?

I’ll be leading a retreat at Bonnevaux this summer titled The Spirit of Work: The Integrated Professional to explore together how a contemplative practice can enable us to experience greater stability, strengthen our relationships and help us become more effective leaders.

During the retreat, we will explore how our practice can help us manage stress, manage our time, give us a perspective that enables us to make better decisions and also help us develop deeper relationships.

These benefits apply to both our personal and professional lives.

We cannot manage other people, for example, unless we can manage ourselves. We often make the mistake in my view, of over-compartmentalizing our professional and personal lives.

The approach will be at least primarily a secular one, although shifting from the ego to other centeredness certainly has a spiritual dimension to it, we will be focusing primarily on how this shift can give us greater stability and make us more productive.

In terms of the dynamics of the retreat. I certainly hope we can create an environment that is sufficiently intimate, that all of us feel comfortable sharing our individual experiences, whether they be profound or mundane. You will certainly hear how my own experiences, including my many mistakes, have shaped my professional career. I hope you will be able to join us.

Sean Hagan distils his long experience at the top of global organisations like the International Monetary Fund. With wit and wisdom, during this 3-day retreat at Bonnevaux, he will share how he discovered the deeper value of work after he began to meditate.
