Reflections on the theme Beholding Divine Beauty

We want to hear your views on the WCCM Theme for 2024

We discussed with each of the speakers and some meditators how they would approach the WCCM theme of 2024, Beholding Divine Beauty – And God Saw That It Was Very Good. And also how they would interact with each other and with the people participating.

And we put this question to them:

When you consider wisdom, meaning everything that is good, beautiful, creative, compassionate, what in particular does this call to mind, from what you love, what you admire, what you are inspired by in your own life?

And when you hear the verse from the Book of Genesis, “and God saw that it was very good” what in particular is very good for you? A poem or a work of art? Someone you love, the place, a moment in time?

From the speakers

And God saw that it was very good… What makes me think most of that is when I contemplate the tiny details in things: the insides of an iris petal, the tiny bits of bark, the patterns, sheer pointless detail. It seems, as Meister Eckart says, to live without a why

I think the most beautiful, most lovely thing, not even a thing really, created in the world, created again and again every day, are children. So fresh, so young, so beautiful, so innocent, so honest. And I think as we live in some troubled times, global warming and in fact, all kinds of politics.I think that it's hard for the adults, for people like me to deal with things. My trust, my faith is in the children that they will be wiser than we have been.

The night sky, the darkness, the points of light, the incomprehensible vastness of this space. The distance and the wisdom that put it all together, and of which we are a part.

The beauty of creation has a lot to do with light and particularly with the light of the sun. I remember once watching the sunrise on Mount Sinai many, many years ago, which was an absolutely spectacular and memorable moment and a sense of the beauty of creation and the goodness of creation that was so powerful.

When I think about God's goodness,
I think about the sea, the waves...
I love to contemplate the nature and also the people walking around the streets going to their work, the encounters of friends. Everything that reminds me of God's goodness.
