If you want to develop, cultivate the field of your heart and the field of your life and uncover the treasure of the kingdom, then a serious contemporary practice is necessary. We discover that this is built into our human nature, this is natural. This is not something that’s imposed from outside. No one can make you do it, and John Main is not saying you have to do it or else you will not go to heaven. He is sharing from his own experience and from that of the tradition, he’s sharing with us this fundamental law of the spiritual life, that a regular practice fits into our life most naturally and healthily with this balance morning and evening. That’s how every day is physically is constructed, and that’s why we recommend to meditate in once in the morning, once in the in the evening as a minimum. Of course we have to adapt our times and do the best we can in a world in which we don’t have a very natural rhythm of life – we live in artificial light, artificial living conditions – but the fundamental principle is the same, morning and evening, the beginning and the end of the day.
A serious practice is necessary
