Accepting the spiritual dimension of yourself

We would say, as you meditate, you are accepting the spiritual dimension of yourself. But for many people this doesn’t really make sense. And the reason that it is difficult to approach meditation as a spiritual practice is that in our very materialistic society we begin anything we do by saying, ‘What is there in this for me?’ And we ask that question in a very narrow-minded way. Of course, anything we do, we do it for some reason and some purpose which we hope is going to bring, in the long run in some way, benefit to us. But we can ask this question in a very consumeristic way, in a very narrow, materialistic way. And if that’s how we start, we’re going to find it difficult to really understand the spiritual meaning and nature of meditation.
