I think we as meditators would like to extend this metaphor to the word that we repeat faithfully and listen to humbly in our meditation every day. This “pruning” will feel hard at times. Even as it is bearing fruit it can be be painful. But one of the signs that this is happening as Jesus promises is that we have this growing feeling that we are at home in God and Christ is in us. This is the meaning of his words, that we “remain in him”. This word “remain” is a very rich and profound word. It isn’t just an extension of time, it’s being in, dwelling in, but being part of. So whoever remains in me, with me, in them, that person is alive and is connected.
