Attention is good work

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, ITALY)

To meditate, you have to practise attention, which is why many people give it up too soon: paying attention can be hard work. As you read this now, you may also be thinking of dinner with friends or a problem at work. You may be also saying, ‘Oh, I shouldn’t be thinking of that now; I should be thinking of these great thoughts that old Whatshisname is sharing.’ But when we do pay attention to what someone, anyone, is saying – or listen to the mantra – we quickly discover that attention is good work. It brings out the best in us and it produces benefits for others. Any kind of attention involves leaving self behind, because in giving your attention you are giving yourself.
