Discovering what is changeless

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, FRANCE)

What we learn from our daily meditation is to “keep death constantly before our eyes”. That is how St Benedict described it to his monks. We might say it is to be able to face the impermanence of life, the fact that things are always passing away – we have no abiding city. The great teachings and parables of Jesus keep reminding us to live in the present moment, not to try to build false securities, false empires, to face impermanence not with fear or despair or rage, but to face impermanence with confidence and faith, so that in facing it we can discover what is changeless.
