Individuation is a process of change, of transformation. And the ego itself is transformed in this process of individuation, not destroyed. It’s transformed. And as it is transformed, it is revealed as a mechanism. In other words, it’s just a function – the means, a method, it’s not the goal, it’s not the boss. It’s just a way of allowing us not to be swallowed up into the anonymous crowd, not to be only a member of the family, only an Italian or Irish or French or American, not only one of the crowd, but to be ourselves. And that does require certain separation. And this happens through separation.
