Sounding the mantra

(…) we move from saying the mantra with constant interruption in our minds, we all begin in our heads, and then gradually over time as the conversion process unfolds, we move to sounding the mantra. What does that mean? It means that we say the mantra of course, but with less effort, less self-conscious effort, because now it is more becoming part of us. It resonates with us. And we need less effort. We are interrupted less often. Of course, as we sound the mantra we can still be experiencing distraction and periods of complete distraction where we stop saying the mantra altogether. But then we let go, and we return to sounding the mantra. So it’s a gradual and subtle process, difficult to put into words but obvious to anyone who meditates regularly. And then the next step is listening. Now the mantra is deeply embedded, deeply at home in our consciousness in our heart. It’s why it’s called the prayer of the heart. And now, when we sit down to meditate, most of the time it’s more as if we’re just releasing it.
