John Main says that what is really important is that we make this discovery for ourselves. We’re not just hearing it from other people, taking somebody else’s word for it. Each of us must know from our own experience. Once we do know this or begin to know this from our own experience, everything else begins to fall into place. Everything follows from it in the right order, he says. So the priority of being is what he’s talking about. First be, then you will be ready to do. But if you’ve lost this connection, this experience, this familiarity with being, which is not mechanistic, if you’ve lost this connection with being, your doing is going to be out of control. And then he says, in discovering this potential we also discover that the people we live with, the people we love, the people we work with, each of them and all of them have the same depth of spirit in them, the same capacity for opening to the mystery of their own being. So, to see ourselves in others and others in ourselves.
