The essence of the gospel is that a miracle of human transformation and social transformation happens when we turn our attention to each other in love and we become generous. As generous as God is. And the sign of God’s generosity is the existence of creation with so many signs of beauty and goodness and celebration. That is at the heart of our teaching on meditation as well. John Main speaks about generosity when he speaks about saying the mantra. When we say the mantra, he says, we should say it generously. It’s a good word to understand what meditation is really about. We save the word generously because we are giving ourselves. Forget about money. Forget about food. Forget about fish or bread.But we’re giving ourselves in that act.
