One of the great values of the contemplative mind, in a time like this, is precisely that it frees us from the oppressiveness of the polarisation that we have put ourselves in. Look at America. It’s in civil war. It’s a nation divided against itself, certainly in this terrible state of division and polarisation which is violent, and we see it becoming physically violent. And we see political leaders calling for violence, denying the right of the other side, even to hold the opinions they hold; they don’t even have the right to exist. You’re only one step away from incarceration and putting them all in prison.
