“You are my friends if you do what I command you.” Well, that sounds a bit conditional, doesn’t it? You’re only my friend if you do what I say. But listen to what Jesus says! He says there’s only one commandment which is love each other. Turn from yourself. Recognise your own distraction, your own being, caught up in ourselves. And then you will know what I’m talking about. He’s not saying you have to go to church. He’s not saying you have to fast. He’s not saying you have to obey this or that sexual morality. Or he’s not giving a whole list of rules and regulations—which of course have constructed since he gave us this teaching. He’s simply saying bring it all down to this one simple thing: pay attention. And in that act of attention discover God. God is present in that act of attention.
