I can’t force you to pay attention

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, ITALY)

I can’t force you to pay attention. We could lock the doors strap you into the chairs, but I couldn’t force you to pay attention. Which means that paying attention is a free choice. It’s an expression of freedom, which is the opposite of addiction. So by paying attention and exercising that capacity, that freedom, that gift of being able to pay attention, you are doing something very essentially human and healthy and natural.
