Interiority is the first element

What does Jesus say about prayer? The first thing he says, in the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 6:5-8), is: ‘When you pray, go into your inner room’. What does that mean? The heart. ‘Close the door and pray there where your Heavenly Father is, and you will be enriched and rewarded.’ The ground of being. Not the idea of God, but the real presence in that inner room. ‘God is the centre of my soul,’ as John of the Cross said. So interiority is the first element of Jesus’ teaching on prayer.
