Contemplation is the key that we need to recover in the modern church, in modern Christianity. We didn’t lose the key entirely, but well, we sort of mislaid it and we are more and more recovering it. It’s to recover this key to the inner room –Jesus tells us we must enter this inner room (Mt 6:6). It’s the key to prayer. It’s the key to liturgy. It will revive and renew our liturgy. It’s the key to our social action, to our responsibilities for the poor, it’s the key to ethics as we face more and more complex ethical questions produced by medical science, for example.
