Where the ego is in control, our experience of love will be diminished. Where the true self is in the ascendant and the ego is in the service of the of the true self, then our capacity for love will be increasing. The test then is, as Jesus would say, laying down our life for others. What does that mean? It means two things, it means that we are willing to accept the suffering of others, even when that suffering is a direct expression of their own egotism. So to say it again, we are able to accept and carry in ourselves or on ourselves, the suffering of others even when that suffering is a direct expression of their egos
