Like a volcano erupting

(…) in order to have that commitment to the journey, perhaps we need a framework of faith or framework of understanding. So these moments are not random. But they’re also like a volcano erupting. They’re not easily predictable. I like what this Zen master said. He said, ‘Some people don’t even know that they are enlightened.’ And I think that’s worth reflecting on. Because our idea of enlightenment as if this was something we have to obtain or qualify for, or we have to graduate into and so on, can be really deceptive and counterproductive to the journey, because the monk who knows that he is praying is not praying truly, the monk who does not know that he is praying is truly praying. Remember what Jesus said about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing (Mt 6:3).
