Looking through the mirror

This is why, John Main says, most of us come to meditation: because we don’t want to look into the mirror for the rest of our lives, and see everything in reverse, everything backwards. We need, we want to look through it, beyond it, and beyond ourselves. We come to meditation because we want to look with courage into the infinite mystery of God. But then, he says, and I think we’ve all experienced this, when we begin to feel that first loss of self-consciousness, when we begin to enter into the silence of meditation, then we may become disturbed and take fright because we feel we’re losing something. So we become frightened. And this is where Fr John says we need the support of each other, we need community.
