Moments of sudden enlightenment are not the end of the journey

… you might remember Thomas Merton’s famous moment of enlightenment as he went into Louisville from the monastery at Gethsemani. He went to the dentist, and he was standing at the traffic lights, waiting to cross the road, and he said in this one instant he had this overwhelming knowledge and insight into the beauty and the goodness of the world and of each of the people going about their daily tasks. So these moments of sudden enlightenment are revelations. But then they become integrated into the next stage of the journey, they’re not the end of the journey.
