Myths give us courage

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN)

So what’s the cure for that? for this loss of contemplative wisdom, and for the loss of the common language, the stories. We can’t live without myths, so we invent myths, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings They give us something to work with. These are minor myths, something to work with, but dominated by consumerism and commercialism. There’s no great myth about death in our modern culture, I don’t think, no tragedy. You can’t create a tragedy, many people would say, without the ‘god’ question being in the conversation, even just as a question. We are in a critical, serious situation, I think. So myths give us courage, that meaning is waiting for us to discover. They remind us of hope in miracles, cures and healing wells. And they connect us to what is mysterious and life-giving. They give us hope. Myths help us to understand ourselves, our beliefs, our customs, our taboos, where we have come from.
