St Paul says that this experience of being overwhelmed by love is what leads us to a new creation. And this shows us this mystical journey of the Gospel, of personal transformation. What’s the point in doing any of this unless we are really embracing change? Deep radical change within ourselves. And handing over the agenda for change, and the process of change, to the Spirit. Not trying to control that. We can’t control our own transformation. We can only be transformed to the degree that we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed. And that, strangely, is the gift of meditation. It’s very ordinary, day to day. We don’t always feel like meditating. Sometimes we feel we’re bad at it. Sometimes we feel we’re failing. But if we’re faithful to the practice to the mantra, to the day-to-day practice, and come to that point which Father John says, where we realize that these times of meditation are in fact the most important times of the day, then we are doing this.Â
