Nurturing the inner world

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, IRELAND)

So there’s prayer. Then there’s work, which takes many different forms of course. For St Benedict, it was primarily manual work, but any kind of work that is involved in life. And then the third element is lectio, or reading or nurturing the inner world, nurturing our imagination, our mind with good nourishing content, not just entertainment, but really feeding our mind – with the scriptures for example, good music and good art, and so on. So these are the three elements of the human person that make up body, mind and spirit. That’s who we are. Of course, they overlap and harmonise, and if they don’t harmonise, then we are unhappy, we’re unhealthy.
