Other-centredness

POTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, US

Other-centredness is at the heart of meditation. When we sit down to meditate we are doing this work of love. It may not feel like it; we may feel very distracted, very turbulent, with all of our problems and being full of ourselves. But we are doing this work of love. As we say the mantra we try to give it our full attention because we are changing the direction of our mind. We are putting into practice the first thing Jesus said in his teaching: change your minds, repent, metanoia: let your minds be remade. And it’s this call to other centeredness that we experience constantly learning to meditate. But that spills over without our even realizing into our life and, of course, into our relationships. That’s the wholeness of the vision that the teaching of Jesus gives us. That’s why it transcends anything that is parochial, racial, nationalistic, or anything that becomes an expression of religious imperialism or religious egoism.
