Reconnecting with the great myths

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN)

Myth is always enacted, not just spoken, or narrated; it’s enacted in ritual, in liturgy, in dance and ceremony. Well, I think that is the role of contemplative practice. It’s the role of meditation. In our education and in our institutions today, it recharges the great myths of the gospel, and the great myths of humanity. From that mythology comes theology and psychology and cosmology, with humane depth and sense of wonder. If we remain disconnected from the great myths, we will see consciously generated myths appear. And we’re seeing it again in fascism. Huge movement of fascism, as we know it. So we will create false myths unless we get back to the real myths.
