Smashing of the mirror is silence

In John Main’s way of putting the teaching of Jesus into the context of meditation and contemplative wisdom, is that the smashing of the mirror is silence. It’s not doing violence to ourselves, punishing ourselves, denying ourselves the good things of life. But it is about entering into this deep experience of silence where the attention comes off ourselves, where we let go or we lose self-consciousness in the continuous purifying work of the mantra, and that it’s in this work day by day, week by week, month, by month, decade by decade, that we let go of the ego or the ego falls into its proper place.
