The paradox is that we are taking the attention off ourselves, so that’s why it is challenging. Because we are all most of the time thinking about ourselves, thinking about our problems, thinking about our stress-related conditions of life – the deadlines we’ve got to meet, the personal relationships that are causing us trouble, the anxieties we have about happiness or fulfilment or the future, or financial or medical problems, whatever. Most of the time the attention is on ourselves or upon these aspects of ourselves. Now in meditation, we take the attention off all of that.
