The capacity to be surprised

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, MYANMAR)

(…) the ability, or the capacity to be surprised is a sign of a healthy spirituality, of a spiritual life that is truly open to the other, open to God, rather than focusing upon itself and self-cultivation, which suggests that the ego would be in control. But the capacity to be surprised means you’re in a way defenceless, you’re open, you’re vulnerable. And you can be surprised by joy, surprised by the fruits of the Spirit, as they develop in you, and in your relationships.
