The ego has a purpose

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, THE HOLY LAND)

I’m trying to avoid giving the impression that the ego is a bad, evil thing, and we’ve got this terrible devil inside of us that we call the ego. I think the ego has a purpose, it’s part of our natural development. But there’s something very vulnerable and something very delicate about how the ego serves the purpose of the whole of our existence, and of our development. So I’m not saying the ego is in itself a bad thing. It’s part of God’s creation, we are part of creation. And everything in creation is perceived by God as good, very good. So let’s not demonise the ego.
