Unless we can sense the personal concern of our root vine in the ground of being, then the whole of this passage (The Vine and the Branches )becomes empowering. Jesus is not drawing attention to himself, and setting himself up as just another God, but empowering his disciples who are connected to him as he is connected to the Father. The whole of Christianity essentially is about the empowering of human beings, empowering them to feel this connection and to produce the fruit that they are capable of. That sounds fine in these days where we talk a lot about self-fulfillment and well-being and, you know, concerned that we are happy. But it isn’t as easy as it sounds — to be empowered, to grow into the person that we are, through that personal connection with the Divine. There’s something else involved. And it is that the deadly parts of ourselves need to be removed. Â
