The Field

Spirituality is not about getting spiritual experiences. It’s certainly not about reading about spiritual experiences that other people have and imagining that we could have them. That’s a kind of false virtual spirituality. It would be like watching nature programmes on TV or the internet, but not actually going out into nature or into your local park or making a walk in the countryside or in the park a part of every day. Spirituality is about cultivating the field of our own human nature. And it’s in that field, if you remember the parable of Jesus about the kingdom (Mt 13:44) it’s in this field that the treasure of the kingdom is buried
