The first level at which the influence of meditation can be felt is in our relationship with ourselves. Maybe we’re less self-critical, less self-hating, less self-judgmental, more accepting of our faults and weaknesses. Meditation brings us I think to that acceptance of ourselves. So that friend-ship with oneself is a meaningful idea. Friendship, as we know, really depends upon the other, but it’s when we can become accepting of ourselves that we are able to accept the other for who the other is, without trying to change them, without judging them, without being too per-fectionistic in the way we see and evaluate others in our life. So this is why Aelred writes so beautifully about friendship and sees Christ forming a third between us.
