A violinist told me once that there was a quality, a dimension to his relationship to his repertoire, to the works that he played and replayed and practised all his career, works that he was identified with and famous for, works that he’d ‘married’ in a sense. But, he said, ‘There is a dimension of my relationship to these works and to the composers of these great works that only time could give, could only come with time.’ He’d mastered them technically, studied their history, knew them by heart, was deeply familiar with them, was married to them, but only time could open up certain dimensions of their meaning, of their beauty, of their power, to him. So this I think is what we mean by faith. And faith in Christ illuminates what we mean by finding ourself.
