The love that moves the sun and the stars

You remember Thomas said, ‘Show us the Father, then we will be satisfied’ (Jn 14:8). And he said, ‘To see me [to see me, to really perceive not just look at, really to perceive me, understand me, know me] is to see the Father.’ (Jn 14:9) And what is the nature of the Father? Who is the Father? What does the ‘Father’ mean? Well for many people who don’t spend much time with this question, just calling the Father the ‘Father’ is a problem. It’s male, it’s patriarchal, it’s anthropomorphic, it’s simplistic, it’s childish. It’s the ‘Father’ or some kind of superparental figure who happens also of course to be a male. So we have to deal with that, and move to another level of listening. So what is the nature of the Father? Who is the Father? What does ‘the Father’ mean, and how does Jesus show us the Father? Jesus makes it very clear, especially in John, that everything he says and does, everything he knows about himself, derives directly from his experience of the Father and his relationship to the Father. Maybe we can say that the Father is the love that moves the sun and the stars.
