A contemplative Christianity is capable of giving a new reading to the scriptures, such as these short passages I’ve mentioned. A contemplative Christianity can renew and revive the cultivation of the Word of God as a source of nourishment to the soil of people’s inner journeys, because a contemplative Christianity awakens within each person and within communities, a fresh understanding of the nature of spiritual experience itself. And it doesn’t confuse religious externals, which can be very helpful and very nourishing, but it doesn’t confuse the external religious forms with the nature of spiritual experience itself.Â
