The ego is our sense of being separate, and therefore it gives us a strong inclination to preserve ourselves. When we hear somebody say to us, “Oh, be generous,” we probably think, “Oh, they’re asking for money.” But real generosity means that we can go beyond the ego control. The real generosity is where we face our attention. And can we sustain that? Can we not just look at other people? Can we gaze upon them? Because God doesn’t just look at us once and then look away because he’s got other things to do. But can we gaze and sustain that attention, that loving attention on each person we meet and upon the world that we live in?
