The virus of perfectionism

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, FRANCE)

We live in a society that worships success. The epitome of this cultural phenomenon of success, the only thing that matters, is what? Winning! Well that’s a very, very dangerous philosophy and it leads to misery in the end. And it is unsustainable, because no one is perfect. Everybody fails. If I wanted to learn Mandarin and I never wanted to fail, I would never learn, would I? You only learn by accepting the fact you are going to fail. That you are not perfect, and one of the great things we have to get out of our system, and it has infected our system like a virus, is perfectionism. We think we should be perfect. We have to look perfect, act perfect, we have to make other people think we are success-ful, on top of things all the time, we never fail. In terms of leadership, the ability to accept and to show that you are imperfect has a good leadership principle. You can be human in front of the people that you are working with or leading. So be careful that you don’t get controlled by this virus of perfectionism in relation to your meditation.
