Being yourself is liberty of spirit, the freedom to be able to accept yourself realistically without having to apologise for yourself. As John Main says, without feeling you have to make yourself acceptable to God or acceptable to other people who you want to impress, and free from being trapped into the roles that we play, into role-playing, which is of course what the ego likes to do. So, John Main’s model of the self is a biblical model of the body, the mind, and the spirit. But it is shaped and simplified and made very practical through his teaching on meditation. John Main puts a contemplative practice of meditation at the centre of his understanding of human existence, a human life that is on its way to divinisation, on its way, home, on its way to God.
