Some words of John Main from his collection of talks called The Way of Unknowing:
To awaken is to open our eyes. And we open them, as St Benedict said, to the divinising light. And what we see, transforms what we are.
We’ll just read that again. This is really a description of the process of breakthrough. And remember, I’m speaking about breakthrough not as just a big event, sometimes we have big moments of revelation, dramatic changes of consciousness or ways in which we see everything. But the breakthrough itself essentially is a process of development, we are constantly breaking through into the next stage of our journey. And he’s describing it here as awakening, to become more conscious of ourselves and of our surroundings.
