After Jesus has told the Pharisees and the scribes what he thinks of them, he then calls the people back to him. He wants to communicate this to everybody. He wants to educate them: envy, slander, pride, all of these little dark shadows in us, these are the things that we need to smash open and expose to the great freedom. This is what St. Paul calls the glorious liberty of the children of God. That, I think, is the message of the gospel. And it’s a perennial message because we are constantly forgetting it and slipping back. Therefore, we have to purify the heart.
