Your own experience is your teacher

The most important thing we are trying to do is to help you to get into the daily practice. And your own experience is your teacher. The Latin expression for that is magistra experientia, ‘experience is your teacher’. That word ‘experience’ is very important, but don’t confuse it with experiences. You may think, if you are beginning to meditate, you may think, ‘Well something should happen in my meditation. I should levitate a few inches off the ground. Or I should begin to develop this kind of radiant aura around me that everyone will notice. Or I will begin to become some kind of super intelligence and see what’s coming around the corner.’ Well that may come, hasn’t come to me yet but it may come to you. So don’t pay attention to it – this is the best advice. It may not be the sexiest advice to give but it is the best advice if you want to learn to meditate.
