Evelyn Underhill (1875 –1941) was a poet and novelist as well as a pacifist and mystic known for her numerous works on religion and spiritual practice, in particular Christian mysticism. Her best-known work is Mysticism, published in 1911.. Evelyn Underhill wrote 39 books and hundreds of articles and reviews. In this presentation, Robyn will focus on Underhill’s later, more mature writings, particularly her retreat talks.

Robyn Wrigley-Carr is Associate Professor in Spirituality and Spiritual Care at the University of Divinity in Australia. She is the author of The Spiritual Formation of Evelyn Underhill (2020) and Music of Eternity: Meditations for Advent with Evelyn Underhill (The Archbishop of York’s Advent Book, 2021), and she edited Evelyn Underhill’s Prayer Book (2018). She is currently working on the book, On Retreat with Evelyn Underhill. As well as writing numerous articles about Underhill and presenting on podcasts such as Renovaré, she is a spiritual director and leads retreats and Quiet Days in Australia, England and the US. Robyn’s PhD (University of St. Andrews, Scotland) examined Underhill’s main spiritual director - Baron Friedrich von Hügel, and the spiritual nurture he gave to others.
