Mark Carney

Mark Carney is Chair of Brookfield Asset Management Inc. He is also the Head of Transition Investing and in this role, he is focused on the development of products for investors that will combine positive social and environmental outcomes with strong risk-adjusted returns. Mr. Carney is an economist and banker who served as the Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020, and prior to that as Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 until 2013. He was Chairman of the Financial Stability Board from 2011 to 2018. Prior to his governorships, Mr. Carney worked at Goldman Sachs as well as the Canadian Department of Finance. He is a long-time and well-known advocate for sustainability, specifically with regard to the management and reduction of climate risks, and is currently the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and Co-Chair for the Glasgow Finance Alliance for Net Zero. He is also an external member of the Board of Stripe, a member of the Global Advisory Board of PIMCO, Harvard University, Rideau Hall Foundation, Bilderberg, the boards of Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Peterson Institute for International Economics the Hoffman Institute for Global Business and Society at INSEAD, Cultivo, as well as Senior Counsellor of the MacroAdvisory Partners, Advisor of the Watershed, and Chair of Chatham House, the Group of Thirty and also Advisory Board Chair for Canada 2020. Mr. Carney holds doctorate and master’s degrees from Oxford University and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University. Mark was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Canada. After growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, he obtained a bachelor degree in Economics from Harvard University and a master and doctorate degrees in Economics from Oxford University.

Mark Carney is the UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance. He addresses our theme of Metanoia from a distinguished career in finance that included serving as Governor of the Bank of England and of the Bank of Canada. With a contemplative perspective that informs his professional vision, he will discuss how we can change our mind in order to change the present perilous direction in which humanity is moving.
