Back to Basics: Exploring the Point of Nothingness

Back to Basics: Exploring the Point of Nothingness

In a recent talk part of the Future of Religion online series exploring the future of spiritual life, Timothy Shriver addresses how contemplative practice connects directly to the cultural and political challenges of our time. Tim examines how meditation serves as an essential tool for moving past modern polarization, offering a path toward a future shaped by deep religious experience rather than division.

Returning to the Basics

Tim opens by reflecting on his own decades-long journey within a religious tradition, noting that institutions often focus heavily on rituals, music, and dogmas while overlooking the most fundamental elements of a spiritual life. To find these basics, he turns to Thomas Merton’s famous description of the point de vierge—the point of nothingness:

“At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point or spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal… This little point of nothingness and of absolute poverty is the pure glory of God in us.”  – Thomas Merton

Rather than an escape from reality, Tim emphasizes that this point of nothingness represents a state of total presence. By quieting the mind, letting go of distractions, and releasing the constant drive for approval, control, and safety, individuals can awaken to their true self.

The Culture of Contempt vs. The Inner Muscle

Contrasting this inner stillness with contemporary society, Tim highlights what he calls a “culture of contempt”. Driven by polarized news media and algorithmic technologies designed to monetize outrage, modern culture frequently fosters division, tribalism, and devotional anger.
To counter this, Tim points to practical frameworks like the Dignity Index, which helps people recognize when their communication shifts from healthy disagreement down into disdain and contempt. Just as physical exercise strengthens the body,Tim notes that meditation strengthens the “muscle of the heart,” allowing individuals to pause, recognize their own powerlessness over division, and choose a posture of curiosity, humility, and love instead of retaliation.

Mystics or Bust: The Future of Religious Experience

Drawing on historical figures like Etty Hillesum, Tim illustrates how a deep contemplative foundation can sustain the human spirit even amid immense external suffering.
Ultimately, Tim argues that the future of religious and spiritual life relies on returning to these core mystical truths. Quoting theologian Karl Rahner’s prediction that the Christian of the future will either be a “mystic” or “cease to be anything at all,” Tim concludes that cultivating the inner eye of love is essential. By practicing silence, embracing naked intent, and recognizing the inherent dignity in every person, humanity can begin to heal social fractures and navigate a season of contempt with grace.

As Chairman of Special Olympics, he has driven the largest expansion of the organization in its history—growing the movement from one million athletes to over six million athletes in more than 170 countries around the world. As Chairman of UNITE, a non-profit that also emerged from this exploration, he has helped to pioneer the Dignity Index—a new tool to help Americans disagree without demonizing each other. Tim is the keynote speaker at the John Main Seminar 2026 in Washington D.C. and online – 17 to 20 September.
