In this video, Fr Cyprian Consiglio – Camaldolese monk, musician, composer – suggests that the spiritual life becomes more accessible when it is expressed not only through religious symbols and doctrines, but also through direct human experience.
Drawing from both Christian monasticism and Asian traditions, he highlights the value of “phenomenological” language — practical ways of understanding growth, transformation, prayer, meditation, breath, and awareness.
He explains that spiritual practice is not merely symbolic, but embodied and concrete. Practices such as meditation, chanting, fasting, and caring for the body shape inner transformation. Consiglio points to insights from yoga and Buddhism as valuable “technologies” for working with the body and mind, helping people engage more deeply with the Divine.
At the heart of his reflection is a deeply Christian vision of embodiment: the body is not an obstacle to spiritual life, but “the hinge of salvation.” From creation to the Incarnation and Resurrection, the Christian story affirms that God works through the body, through time, and through lived human experience.
Meditation & Consciousness with Fr Cyprian
In a world of theory, Fr. Cyprian invites us into the ascetical life—not as a burden, but as a practical path. Using the wisdom of the yoga tradition and Buddhist insights into the mind, we can begin to make sense of the transformation happening within us.
Fr Cyprian will be leading the retreat ‘Meditation and Consciousness: An Interreligious Perspective” in Bonnevaux, France from 25 to 30 August.
