Knowing Simone Weil

Simone Weil Profile

Listen to Dr Stefan Reynolds as he describes philosopher Simone Weil, an exact contemporary of Etty Hillesum. Simone lived in France and was part of that French existentialist movement.

Dr Stefan Reynolds will be leading a 4-day retreat, from 22 – 25 June, titled Edith Stein, Etty Hillesum and Simone Weil: A Spirituality for Living through a Time of Crisis

By Stefan Reynolds

"Simone Weil really sought for objectivity. It's as if everything comes from outside. And she says, 'The truth reveals itself to her' but she is hiding herself, quite the opposite from Etty Hillesum. Like Edith Stein and Etty, she has this sense that the primary experience of the truth of God is in silence and she has this mystical conversion which is to do with the quality of silence. And the silence is more real than any sound. It is not the absence of sound, a presence which you can feel."
