Contemplation in times of division

(PHOTO: LAURENCE FREEMAN, IRELAND)

When we look at some historical background to the life of Jesus of Nazareth, we can see that his own society was also a very volatile, very conflicted, very polarised society, divided not only between the occupying forces and the Romans and the indigenous people, but even among the Jews themselves – total fragmentation. So, it was out of this historical moment of the incarnation of God in Jesus that the gospel teaching and the Spirit of Christ has come. So contemplation is not something just reserved for nice, quiet weekends or Saturday afternoons. It’s not something we have to have the perfect conditions for.
