Troy Duncan with wife Tracy, Jack (17), Zoe (14) live on 11 acres in Hawkes Bay. Even while faced with the devastation of his own property, Troy rescued many neighbours with an inflatable boat. In the aftermath, he created a Facebook page for residents to share information and support each other. He also engaged with council representatives, met with MPs and the Prime Minister. Troy continues to lead meetings and advocate for improved processes and outcomes in what promises to be a long and complex recovery. In recognition of his leadership, Troy has been nominated for a Kiwibank Local Hero New Zealander of the year 2024 award

Kathy Egan

Kathy Egan is the mother of four adult children, all of them working in the healthcare or health education sector, plus grandmother to six grandchildren. Her long career in the caring sector includes nursing, working as a relationships counsellor and leading a social service agency. Now retired, Kathy remains connected to her community as president of her local conference of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, and through this helped many victims of the cyclone. Kathy is the recipient of a Napier City award and a Queen’s Service Medal for community work. Kathy is a long-time meditator, leads two weekly Christian meditation groups and is a WCCM oblate.

Margaret von Hartitzch has worked in the healthcare sector, in childcare and as a chaplain at Catholic high schools in the Hawkes Bay. Margaret, and her husband Trevor’s house, was damaged by floodwaters during Cyclone Gabrielle. This had been Trevor’s home for 70-years and where they celebrated milestone occasions with their blended family of nine children plus grandchildren and their first great-grand child.

WCCM Meditatio Earth Crisis 5 will be hosted by the community in New Zealand which,  on 14 February 2023, experienced the devastating impact of Cyclone Gabrielle. 

This Forum will look at  the impact that such a traumatic event has had on the community but how they survived. 

We will meditate, hear the personal experience of three people and have a time of discussion and reflection on the role of meditation in surviving an apocalyptic climate event such as this.
