A paradigm-challenging scientist and man of faith, Dr Sheldrake will share his latest insights in this talk in the series. According to materialist philosophy, still predominant in institutional science, minds are located inside heads. Mind is merelythe activity of the brain. But there are good empirical reasons for seeing this view as much too limited. People can influence others at a distance just by looking at them, even if they look from behind and when all sensory clues are eliminated.

People’s intentions can also be detected telepathically by animals from miles away, as with dogs that know when their owners are coming home. Experimental tests show that some people know who is calling them before they pick up the phone. Our minds extend out beyond our brains both through attention and intention, and underlie many so-called “psychic” phenomena. They also extend beyond our brain in spiritual experience, linking us to forms of consciousness more inclusive than our own.
